Excellent summary and review. The photo, however, is of a diesel fire pump controller. The voltage drop is meant for electric fire pump controllers. Diesel fire pump controllers start the engines with DC batteries, and the 115 VAC shown there is only used to charge those batteries, so voltage drop wouldn't apply here.

The latest version of the NEC added "For flat cables, the major diameter dimension of the cable shall be used to determine the bending radius.". So you cannot use the thickness in any scenario regardless of the way it is bent.

Correct. I tried to stop them from doing it because it was a terrible change, but my public comment didn't help. They are fixing it in the 2026 NEC, however.

@@RyanJacksonElectrical Interesting. So my state doesn't adopt the 2023 version of NEC until 2025. Since the current version has ambiguity, and the next version clarifies the ambiguity, do you think that an inspector would still interpret the current version with the clarification that the new version has?

NEC needs to focus on electrical construction safety FULL STOP. Getting into pulled off counter potential etc is not an electrical safety issue. Where an appliance is placed or how it is used is not something electricians need to be involved with. In regards to lawsuits the requirements of the code could just as easily be used against the creators of the code as the "experts in the industry" directing the construction process. AHJ exclusions do not apply to the NFPA, so stay the hell out of it if liability is really the concern. Not to mention the dam code book is getting ridiculously large and unmanagable year over year and this kind of stuff only adds to the bloat.

You state @3:10, code for internal disconnect does not apply, even if unit has internal heater, even though such a heater is very likely directly line/grid powered. It's also the case that an inverter based appliance, if 100% electronic - is beyond the scope of the code. Function does not matter. Nothing inside either portion, of the mini split, is line/grid powered; not motor or either fan. An inverter based mini split, or maxi split, is NOT air conditioner, not code wise. If inverter based, tonnage makes no difference. The code seems to improperly use the term "air conditioner" as a generic term. The code only applies to A/C units that have line powered internal motors/components. Even the inter-unit connecting cable is not covered by code. An all electronic HVAC is a generic appliance. None of the code's "air conditioning" references apply. This is (indirectly) stated as much in your 11May2019 (UA-cam v=xDQtmZHKMUA) video, at ~11min mark; the outside motor is "line powered". Video should have pointed out that the code is wrong, the code applies generically to loads that are directly line/grid powered, and only to "air conditioner" that has line powered motor. Electrically, there is no difference between an inverter based mini split and a crypto computer with the similar internal power supplies. That any electronic HVAC used to list RLA or LRA was out of ignorance, or incompetence, by whomever made the label. Same is true for "Location" restriction. Any "common sense" narrative is irrelevant, especially since there is no user interaction, with the appliance controlled with a remote - code does not apply - at all.

This is a section of code that really irritates me at least for branch circuits. Don't get me wrong it's necessary for calculating the size pipe you need for large conductors and special cases like isolated grounds. However, after you have applied corrections for ampacity the actual practical limit is 9 current carrying conductors (#10's on a 20A circuits) anything more and the step up in wire size becomes impractical, who's going to pull #8 (THHN) for a 20A circuit? Plus you then have to upsize the conduit from 3/4 min. to 1-1/4 for up to 16 or 1-1/2 to 20 the pipe can handle 22 correction step up is at 20. I can't say you'll never do any of this, but seriously this section is mostly navel-gazing at best and leads to bad installs that could end up in dangerous situations and worst.

Line side taps are usually connected via IPC s inside of the home's main panel. Those then feed a fused disconnect next to the panel then travel outside to an unfused disconnect for the fire department per NFPA required location with signage. That then feeds the solar combiner with the strings of each array of panels.
